PNWA Literary Contest frequently asked questions

(Please note that these FAQs are ONLY geared toward our literary contest for unpublished manuscripts. For details on our contest for published books, the Nancy Pearl Award, click here.)

: Is the contest for unpublished writers only?
A: No. However, the entry itself must be original and not previously published or accepted for publication or production at the time of entry (this includes independent and self-published works).

Q: Where do I submit my work?
A:  You may submit your work in one of three ways - mail, office drop off, or online.  
 (NOTE: Our mailing address is different from our physical address) Send your submission to:

Email DIGITAL entries to:

Upload your entry while you fill out the online entry form and pay your entry fee.

Your entry should be attached as a .doc or .docx attachment.

PDFs will only be accepted into category 12.

Q: Should the novel be complete before submission?
A: Not necessarily.

Q: Can one person enter more than one work into the same category?

A: No, an author can enter ONLY enter one entry per category.  You cannot enter the same entry in multiple categories.

Q: What is a synopsis?
A: A synopsis is a narrative summary of your entire novel.  We have two articles to use a reference. Click HERE to download a short article called, How to Write a Synopsis. Click HERE to download the article, Attack the Scary Synopsis.

Q: When submitting chapters, can I skip around?
A: No. Please enter the beginning of your novel, from page 1.

Q: Can a revised entry from a previous year be re-submitted?
A: Yes, as long as the entry did NOT win 1st, 2nd or 3rd place in prior years.

Q: If your submission places as a finalist, will the entire manuscript be requested?
A: No.

Q: After 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners are selected from the finalists, are numbers 4 through 8 ranked?
A: No.

Q: My nonfiction book includes endnotes/footnotes. Can my endnotes/footnotes be single spaced?
A: Yes, as long as the entire submission in addition to the endnotes/footnotes follows the guidelines, and the included endnotes/footnotes are within the word count limit.

Q: Does the category need to be on every page of the submission?
A: Yes. All pages of the submission must have the category number, manuscript title, and page numbers located in the upper right-hand corner.

Q: Are entry fees refunded if my entry is disqualified?
A: No, entry fees are non-refundable.

Q: Can I turn in changes to my entry after the deadline?

A: No. Changes may only be made if we contact you prior to February 15th because your piece does not meet entry requirements (not double-spaced, over the word count limit, etc). If you do not send back the changes by the February 15th deadline, your piece will be disqualified.

Q: Do I still need to turn in 3 copies now that the contest is paperless?

A: If you are submitting your entry digitally, you only need to submit 1 copy.  If you are submitting a hard copy of your entry, then yes, you need to submit 3 hard copies of your entry.
