PNWA and the community

As a nonprofit organization, PNWA takes community involvement to heart!

We pride ourselves in introducing young authors to the world of writing. We do this by bringing published authors into classrooms, hosting a free annual writing event for kids (ages 6-18), and supporting the nationally recognized King County Library system. We also encourage new writers each year through scholarships to the PNWA Writers Conference. Over the years, we’ve been fortunate to have been supported in our endeavor by members through a portion of membership dues and by the actions of volunteers.

If you're interested in joining our efforts please donate to PNWA via our secure online donation system.

WRITERS-IN-RESIDENCE

In 2008 we partnered with Echo Lake Elementary School to launch a program dedicated to the love of writing and reading in children. Authors engage the students over a multiweek period on the world of writing and reading.

With expansion on the brain, PNWA wants to bring this rewarding program to as many children as possible. We are currently looking into other elementary schools in Western Washington that are will be a great match for this program.

If you think you know the perfect school for this program please contact us.

YOUNG AUTHORS DAY

Two years ago we launched a new free program dedicated to young writers. This one-day mini-conference provides workshops for children 6-11 and 12-18. In years past we have brought in screenwriter (Ice Age) and author Gerry Swallow and children's book author and classroom aid writer Janet Wong.

Past workshops include:

  • How to Create and Write for Comic Strips (ages 6-11)
  • You Want to be An Author, Now What? (ages 12-18)
  • How a Story is Turned into a Movie (all ages)

KING COUNTY LIBRARY SYSTEM FOUNDATION

The KCLS Foundation supports programs that reach our and encourage residents of all ages to enjoy reading and learning. Each year nearly 2,000 children, youths, and adults benefit from the Foundation-supports programs in our libraries and in our communities.

  • Funding for books in the four Library2Go! vans. These units visit day-care homes and centers, apartment complexes, community centers, senior centers, and other venues.
  • Books for Babies provides reading tips, packets, books, and an Early Literacy DVD to low-income parents of newborns.
  • Play and Learn is a pilot project at two libraries that involves parents and focuses on early literacy activities.
  • Reach Out and Read supports conversations about reading during visits to pediatricians.
  • The Ready to Read program bring early literacy training to parents and caregivers.

thank you to our supporters and members!
